The first commercial biobank has been created in Russia

Vademecum

Russia's first commercial biobank was presented on Thursday in St. Petersburg at the EuroQSAR symposium, which brought together European scientists working on the creation of new medicines.

The biobank is a laboratory that currently has several thousand tissue samples of patients suffering from a group of diseases with unresolved problems – cardiovascular, autoimmune and oncological. Simultaneously with the samples of the affected tissue, a collection of tissue samples without pathology was created to outline the concept of norm.

"These samples were obtained as a result of biopsy or surgery and are intended for scientific research conducted by both academic research teams and pharmaceutical companies," ITAR–TASS quotes Oleg Granstrom, director of the biobank for Development.

Previously, Russian research teams had to apply to foreign biobanks for research and experienced difficulties in transporting biological samples across the border.

The first Russian commercial biobank has already established partnerships with the Almazov Center, the N.N. Petrov Research Institute of Oncology, the I.P. Pavlov St. Petersburg State Medical University, the I.I. Mechnikov Northwestern State Medical University, as well as with cancer research institutes in Moscow and Kazan.

Today there are about 120 large biobanks in the world.
