The first robodantist

Robot dentist implanted 3D-printed teeth into man

The first installation of dental implants, fully performed by an autonomous robot, took place in China. The implants were made using 3D printing. The robot was developed by specialists from the Fourth Military Medical University of China and Beihang University. This is reported by the South China Morning Post.

Even highly qualified doctors sometimes make mistakes. In order to exclude the human factor from medical operations, scientists are developing medical robots to automate some processes or fully robotic operations.

In the last four years, Chinese engineers and doctors have been developing a robot that could independently perform dental operations. It is a robotic manipulator, at the end of which a medical instrument can be fixed.

On September 16, 2017, Chinese specialists tested their development for the first time in real conditions. As part of this operation, the patient was fitted with two 3D-printed implants.

The operation took less than an hour, and the doctors present only watched the robot's actions and did not interfere with its work. The implants were installed with an error of 0.2-0.3 millimeters, which corresponds to the accuracy allowed for such operations. This was achieved through a system that allows the robot to track the patient's movements and adjust its own movements in accordance with them.

There are other robots for performing operations. For example, last year, researchers successfully performed the procedure of applying intestinal anastomosis to a pig, while their interference in the robot's actions was minimal. And German scientists have created a semi-autonomous robot that can drill a channel for installing an implant for hearing-impaired people, taking into account the anatomical features of patients.
