The Gates Foundation has joined the fight against Ebola

The Gates Foundation has allocated $5.7 million for an Ebola drug

Olga Kanygina, VademecumThe Bill and Melinda Gates Charitable Foundation has allocated $5.7 million to a program for the production of experimental drugs for the treatment of Ebola in West African countries.

The organization, founded by former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates and his wife Melinda, intends to work with private partners to create drugs based on blood products of people cured of Ebola, the BBC reports.

Plasma isolated from the blood containing antibodies will be administered to patients suffering from Ebola.

Papa Salif Sow, an expert on infectious diseases working at the foundation, said that within the framework of the program, cooperation will be conducted with representatives of states in order to assess the potential of drugs as soon as possible.

According to statistics from the World Health Organization, Ebola has already claimed the lives of more than 5,000 people, most of the dead are residents of West African countries.

There are no approved medicines for Ebola yet.
