The leading scientific journal Science in the annual top 10 most important discoveries that influenced the development of world science, called the creation of coronavirus vaccines the main scientific breakthrough. This was reported on Friday, December 18, on the publication's website.

In particular, Moderna and Pfizer's BioNTech funds were noted for the Russian drug Sputnik V, as well as funds from the companies Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech.

According to the editor-in-chief of the journal Golden Thorpe, it was clear that the most important scientific breakthrough would be associated with COVID-19, but it became clear that it would be the appearance of a vaccine only in recent weeks.

"For a long time it seemed to us that there was no hope for the appearance of a vaccine, but the process of vaccination of the world's population has actually begun," Thorpe stressed.

Usually the magazine also holds a popular vote, but this year the editorial board limited its choice.

Also on the list of the most important discoveries were gene therapy based on the CRISPR/Cas9 editor, created for the treatment of blood diseases, the discovery of the source of FRB flash signals inside the Milky Way, as well as the discovery of the oldest rock carvings of beastmen on the island of Sulawesi.

On December 16, the head of Rospotrebnadzor, Anna Popova, announced that Russian scientists are working on creating 26 variants of the coronavirus vaccine.

Sputnik V, developed by specialists of the Gamaleya Center, became the first coronavirus vaccine in the world and in Russia. The drug was registered on August 11. The Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation in the same month announced the launch of the vaccine into production and issued a permit for a post-registration study.
