There has never been such a thing in transplantology

Transplantation of a fragment of a mother's lung to a child was carried out for the first time in Japan

Ksenia Naka, RIA NovostiJapanese doctors from the Okayama City Hospital announced that they managed to perform a successful operation for the first time in the world to transplant a fragment of a mother's lung to a child.

A two-year-old child diagnosed with idiopathic interstitial pneumonia needed a transplant of both lungs due to a sharp deterioration in the symptoms of the disease. Doctors removed the lower lobe of the mother's left lung and, having "constructed" smaller left and right lungs from this tissue, performed an operation to transplant a new organ to the child.

The operation was performed at the end of August, and the other day the child was able to breathe independently without the help of an artificial lung ventilation device, which allowed doctors to announce the success of the operation.

This is the world's first operation to transplant an adult lung fragment to a child and the first in Japan to transplant this organ to a two-year-old child.
