Uiba will donate athletes' DNA to the bank

The head of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency V.V. Uiba took part in a joint visiting meeting of the Presidential Council for the Development of Physical Culture and Sports, preparation and holding of the Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic Games in 2014, the 2013 World Summer Universiade, the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the Fund for the Support of Olympians in Russia, held on June 25, 2011 G.in Kazan.

Discussing the state of Russian sports today, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev drew attention to the problem of medical and biological support of sports teams. The President recalled that a corresponding three-year program was approved in the spring of this year and significant funds are allocated for its implementation.

– We need to make sure that this program gives the maximum effect. The responsibility for the implementation of this program lies with the Federal Biomedical Agency. The evaluation (of his work) is the health indicators of our athletes and their results," Medvedev said.

– Six months before the start of the Summer Olympics in London, the Russian national teams will be fully provided with medical personnel, the head of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency V.V. Uiba stressed in his speech.

The Federal Medical and Biological Agency is currently creating a DNA bank of Russian athletes and developing methods of genetic selection of athletes for the Russian national team.

– In 2010-2011, we conducted genotyping of 1,500 members of the Russian national team in order to develop and implement individual programs for medical and biological support of athletes, including monitoring their health and pharmaceutical support, - said Uiba in his report.

He also said that in 2011, a "single depository of personal genetic and metabolic data of athletes with a DNA bank, as well as an algorithm for identifying the risk of diseases that limit athletic performance" will be created.

– Methods of genetic selection of promising athletes are being developed. The technology will allow the Ministry of Sports and Tourism of Russia and coaches to provide information for the selection of candidates for the national teams, taking into account the genetic characteristics of athletes," explained the head of the FMBA of Russia.

He noted that "this is an extremely important direction, which all the world's podium teams are following today."
