Uterus transplantation: the first success

Sweden: the world's first childbirth after a uterus transplant

BBCIn Sweden, a patient with a transplanted uterus managed to give birth to a child for the first time in history.

A 36-year-old woman who was born without a uterus received a donor organ from her 61-year-old relative. Until now, for women with such a diagnosis, there was only one way to get their own child – surrogate motherhood.

According to the British medical journal Lancet, the baby was born in September. The boy was born prematurely, weighing 1 kg 800 grams, but doctors say that the mother and child are doing well.

The woman was one of nine participants in a pilot project in Sweden, in which a year ago they were transplanted uterus from their relatives.

Some of the study participants were born without a uterus, others had this organ removed due to cervical cancer. It is reported that two more participants of the project are currently pregnant. The main reasons for the absence of a uterus in a woman are oncological diseases and birth defects.

Uterus transplantation is a very complicated operation due to the peculiarities of the blood supply to this organ. Prior to this, attempts to transplant the uterus were made twice – in Turkey and Saudi Arabia. However, in both cases, the patients could not carry the child.
