An Italian politician who opposes mandatory vaccination has chickenpox

The president of the Northeastern Autonomous Region of Italy, Massimiliano Fedriga, fell ill with chickenpox and spent four days in the hospital under the supervision of doctors. Previously, he opposed the adoption of a law obliging parents to vaccinate children.

Doctors diagnosed the politician last week. Fedrig has already been discharged from the hospital and sent home.

The law on mandatory vaccination against 12 diseases, including chickenpox, measles and polio, was adopted in Italy in 2017. Children without vaccinations were banned from attending schools and kindergartens. Large fines were imposed on parents who do not vaccinate school-age children.

Fedriga criticized this decision. He called the actions of the authorities "Stalinist", while he does not consider himself a supporter of the "anti-vaccination" movement. The politician is sure that "it is necessary to negotiate with society, and not impose rules on it."

After hospitalization, he did not change his mind. The politician claims that he was infected not from his children, because they were given the necessary vaccinations. The famous Italian doctor Roberto Burioni said that Fedriga's hospitalization should be a wake-up call for adults who do not want to be vaccinated.
