Careful, calcium!

Excess calcium kills women

Tatiana Merkulova, "Newspaper.ru"According to the results of studies published in the British Journal of Medicine (Michaelson et al., Long term calcium intake and rates of all cause and cardiovascular mortality: community based prospective longitudinal cohort study), the consumption of large amounts of calcium (more than a gram per day) by women increases the risk of death from a number of diseases, including heart diseases-vascular system.

At the same time, calcium can enter the body both with food and with medicines and various food additives.

Calcium is the main mineral component of bone tissue, calcium ions are involved in blood clotting, and without it it becomes impossible to conduct impulses along nerve fibers and normal muscle contraction, including cardiac.

Two hormones are mainly responsible for the regulation of calcium metabolism in the body – parathyroid hormone (produced by the cells of the parathyroid glands) and calcitonin (produced by the cells of the thyroid, thymus and parathyroid glands). Parathyroid hormone (a chemical reaction occurs in the presence of vitamin D) increases the calcium content in the blood, reducing its amount in the bones and delaying its excretion. Calcitonin has the opposite effect, it increases the intake of calcium into the bone tissue from the blood. It is also believed that in the body of a woman, sex hormones take part in the regulation of calcium metabolism in the bones.

In Russia, calcium preparations are sold without a prescription and are recommended for strengthening bones, nails and hair. It is common for doctors to prescribe calcium to middle-aged and elderly women, whose risk of osteoporosis (softening of bone tissue) is increased due to a decrease in the production of sex hormones. Also in Russia, in addition to the prevention of bone fragility, calcium preparations are used in combination with antihistamines for the treatment of allergic diseases.

The study of Swedish scientists involved 61,443 women born between 1914 and 1948. On average, they were studied for 19 years. In 1987, 1990 and 1997, they filled out questionnaires about the amounts of calcium consumed. Thus, scientists have identified a link between increased doses of calcium and an increased risk of death.

The highest mortality rate was among women taking more than 1400 mg of calcium per day. There were also high mortality rates in women taking less than 600 mg of calcium per day. Professor Karl Makaelson explained this result by the fact that both increased and decreased intake of calcium into the body disrupt the regulation of metabolism.

The graphs from the BJM article show the risk of premature death from all causes, cardiovascular diseases, coronary heart disease and stroke, depending on the amount of calcium consumed with food and the total amount, including medications and dietary supplements - VM.

A similar study was conducted by scientists from the US National Institutes of Health and among men. According to the results of the work of scientists from the USA, long-term consumption of high doses of calcium increases the risk of death from cardiovascular diseases in men (calcium intake was more than a gram per day), although no similar relationship was found in this work.
