Alzheimer's disease: I know I don't know anything

Scientists failed to find a way to prevent Alzheimer's diseaseABC Magazine based on NIH Materials: Independent Panel Finds Insufficient Evidence to Support Preventive Measures for Alzheimer's Disease

Fish oil, physical activity, or puzzle solving are certainly good for the brain, but there is no evidence that any of the above can prevent Alzheimer's disease.

It was also not possible to confirm the effectiveness of diets, medications, communication methods and other types of treatment subjected to an impartial analysis by an independent group of scientists from the US National Institutes of Health (NIH).

A group of experts analyzed a lot of studies devoted to attempts to prevent a disease that is destructive to the brain and incurable. "We are sorry that we can't promise people that a miracle pill or a daily solution to problems will protect them from this terrible disease, but no method of preventing Alzheimer's disease could be confirmed experimentally," said Martha Daviglus, head of the project from Northwestern University in Chicago.

According to Dr. Daviglas, all currently existing studies are distinguished by causal confusion from the category of what was first: chicken or egg. Do people really keep a healthy brain if they are physically active and socially active? Or, more likely, do they remain physically active and socially active because they have a "clear head"? It is known that these factors are interdependent, but it is not known how. Doctors still don't fully understand how the disease develops. There is no consensus among researchers about whether amyloid plaques are the cause of the disease or its symptoms.

Of the known and proven facts, the following can be named: the main risk factor for the development of the disease is age; the mutation of the gene encoding apolipoprotein E increases the likelihood of Alzheimer's disease.

Scientists are confident that it is necessary to continue research on Alzheimer's disease. In addition, they recommended that registers modeled after the image and likeness of existing cancer registers be introduced into medical use.
