Culture of research

Scientists have doubted the results of many oncological studiesABC Magazine based on BBC materials: Oesophageal cancer cell errors threatened research
There is a possibility that researchers often use the wrong type of cancer cells in their experiments.

This casts doubt on the results of many studies on the problem of cancer. Cell cultures grown for research originate from individual cells taken from specific patients.

For example, it was recently revealed that a cell line marked as a sample of esophageal cancer actually turned out to be a culture containing tumor cells of the lung, stomach and intestines. This culture has been used in at least three published studies, on the basis of which more than 100 scientific papers have been written and 11 American patents have been obtained, which once again underlines the importance of the concerns expressed by scientists. Further use of this culture could lead to the creation of new drugs, but ineffective, and even dangerous.

The problem of "dirty" – contaminated – cell cultures is not new, the scientific community started talking about it 20 years ago. There have long been calls for scientists to be extremely careful when choosing cells for experiments, otherwise there is a risk that the results obtained will be incorrect.

Representatives of the Health Agency (HPA) urged scientists to work only with cell cultures whose origin is known. In their opinion, it is on such cultures that new drugs should be tested before launching clinical trials on patients.
