Gloves for the mute

Gloves have been created that turn sign language into a voice

Vyacheslav Larionov, Hi-News (based on University of Washington: UW undergraduate team wins $10,000 Lemelson-MIT Student Prize for gloves that translate sign language – VM).

Two resourceful guys from the USA have invented gloves that can help mute people communicate with those who do not know sign language.

The device reads hand positions and gestures, and then transmits the received information via Bluetooth to the computer. Then, using special algorithms similar to those used by some voice assistants, the program analyzes the received data and converts them into sounds by searching for matches in its database.

The inventors do not claim the laurels of pioneers in this field, modestly drawing the attention of all interested to the fact that devices designed to help mute people communicate with a large number of people already exist, but have a number of disadvantages. Some use text to output information, individual inventions are good, but they cannot be called compact, because they often cover their hands entirely, and some entangle almost the entire body with their sensors and wires. Therefore, using them in everyday life is quite problematic.

Gloves created by students of the University of Washington fit into a pocket without any problems, so they can be used as an everyday accessory. Such as the usual devices for improving hearing or contact lenses.

From the editors:
It's a shame for the power just to tears: a similar project EnableTalk won the international Imagine Cup competition and was shortlisted by the American Time magazine as one of the best inventions of 2012.

What came of it (or rather, it has not yet come out), you can read in an article from a year ago EnableTalk 2.0: a smart glove for the deaf and dumb “moved” from Donetsk and is returning with a new CEO. Perhaps our guys will be ahead of their competitors from Washington. However, now they work not in Donetsk, but in Silicon Valley – again it's a shame...
