Keep going, or you'll lose it!

Scientists at the University of Tampere (Finland), working under the guidance of Dr. Juha Koskimaki, for five years observed men whose age at the beginning of the study was 55-75 years.

As a result, they found that men who had less than one sexual contact per week at the beginning of the study were 2 times more likely to develop erectile dysfunction over the next five years than men who had sexual contact at least once a week – 8% and 3.2%, respectively. In the group of men who had 3 or more sexual contacts per week, erectile dysfunction developed in only 1.6%.

The cause of erectile dysfunction is problems with the blood supply to the penis. Regular sexual activity helps to maintain the normal functioning of the blood vessels of the penis and the cavernous tissue of the cavernous bodies.

A number of factors contribute to the development of erectile dysfunction, including old age, diabetes and heart disease. However, the authors argue that even taking into account these factors, sexual activity has a significant relationship with the risk of erectile dysfunction.

The authors draw an analogy between the pattern they identified and the need for regular physical activity to maintain good physical shape.

However, they emphasize that although increased sexual activity can improve erectile function, in some cases medical intervention is necessary.
