- Ovtemedusa – a new word of French cuisine
However, we are talking about a very small amount of meat: only one sheep from the experimental herd of the French Institute of Agronomic Research INRA in November 2014 was sent to the slaughterhouse along with "ordinary" animals.
The meat was bought from the slaughterhouse by a private person living in the Paris region. This information came from INRA itself (INRA reports to the legal authorities that it sold an animal breed in the context of a research program – VM), as well as from judicial sources. An animal named Ruby is called a "jellyfish sheep". For research purposes, she was implanted with a jellyfish gene.
Experiments on sheep were conducted in order to study the functioning of transplanted organs and the implementation of experimental protocols on mammals. As part of this program, launched in 2009, a genetically modified sheep named Emerald was born, with a jellyfish protein implanted in it called "Green Fluorescent Protein" (Green Fluorescent Protein). Protein allows you to get an animal with a fluorescent, transparent skin. Among the lambs born from this sheep, each of which was a carrier of the jellyfish gene, was a sheep named Rubin, born in the spring of 2014.
The program is aimed at studying the behavior of transplanted cells within the framework of restoring the functions of the human heart in acute heart failure due to myocardial infarction. Biologists often use the jellyfish gene (Aequorea victoria) to localize and further monitor these cells, since fluorescent cells can be discerned under transparent skin.
The inventors of this method were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2008. The identity of the person who bought the meat of the "sheep-jellyfish" is still being established. INRA claims that the meat of genetically modified sheep does not pose a threat to health. Nevertheless, the institute is investigating, and last week a criminal case was opened in connection with "the sale of a product that is genetically modified or contains genetically modified ingredients."
At the moment, the investigation has managed to establish that one of the employees of the department that conducted experiments on animals (UCEA) deliberately transferred the Ruby sheep to a control, "normal" herd before sending it to the slaughterhouse. Thus, he intended to "take revenge" on his supervisor after a conflict arose at work.
