The fuss over the liver

Either the information about the cancellation of the tender for the order with the code "Prometheus" has not yet reached the Public Council of the Chairman of the MIC, or there are some higher state interests, or even state secrets… But no one canceled the command "Artificial liver – aaatstavit!" on the public procurement website, and RIA Novosti reported the other day:

Scientists will develop an artificial liver by order of the Ministry of Defense

The Ministry of Defense this year announced a project of development work on the creation of a bioengineered human liver (code "Prometheus"), according to the report of the Public Council of the Chairman of the Military Industrial Complex, dedicated to the achievements of the Advanced Research Foundation.

"The scientific task is to grow organs and tissues from a person's own cells by recreating a natural organ: applying a cellular coating to a protein or synthetic framework. It is necessary to work out ways of three–dimensional molding of protein or biodegradable frameworks of various scales," the authors of the report explain.

The purpose of the Prometheus program is to create and develop technologies for emergency life–saving in cases of loss of vital organs as a result of injuries, infections or the development of malignant neoplasms. In the field of biochemistry, it will be necessary to obtain the technology for the production of incubation serum for various stages of organ development. Also, the program will require the development of an advance project for the creation and use of a cellular "bioprinter" for automating individual stages of production.

"Of particular interest are the possibilities of frameless technology for obtaining organs in zero gravity; technologies for conservation and long–term storage of finished organs," the report notes.

The main organization under the program may be the Burnazyan FMBC or the Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Cooperation under the program will require the cooperation of specialists from the Burdenko Main Military Clinical Hospital, Rostec State Corporation, MIPT, the Kurchatov Institute, the Institute of Developmental Biology and other scientific institutions of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.
