Three-dimensional printing of human tissues

Organovo company plans to launch the production of 3D-printed living tissues for transplantation

3dtoday based on company materials: Organovo Introduces 3D Bioprinted Human Liver as Leading Therapeutic Tissue in Preclinical Development

The intentions of the innovative company are supported by the successful results of clinical trials of bioprinted samples on laboratory animals, which demonstrated survivability, low probability of rejection and the possibility of vascular systems development. The company's new program will focus on two tasks – the treatment of cirrhosis and metabolic liver diseases.

"The scientific and commercial progress we have made on the example of living tissue samples for laboratory testing of drugs lays a solid foundation for the creation of large samples for transplantation. The promotion of printed fabrics to the preclinical research level is an important step for Organovo and confirms the capabilities of our technology in a number of areas, including drug safety testing, disease modeling and the production of transplantable tissues for surgical implantation. We believe that 3D-printed fabrics will be able to provide additional options for patients suffering from liver diseases," says Keith Murphy, CEO of Organovo.

If successful, we can expect to submit an application for testing of the technology by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) within three to five years.
