The FPI told when experiments on liquid breathing can begin

RIA News

Tests on humans on breathing not air, but a liquid saturated with oxygen, may begin in the foreseeable future, Vitaly Davydov, Deputy Director General and Chairman of the Scientific and Technical Council of the Foundation for Advanced Research (FPI), said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

In December 2017, Dmitry Rogozin, then Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, showed Russian liquid breathing technologies to Serbian President Alexander Vucic, who visited Moscow: the dachshund was placed in a tank with a liquid that does not contain nitrogen, after a few minutes the animal got used to the new environment and began to breathe normally. The video of the experiment caused a public outcry. In response to criticism, Rogozin stressed that all the dogs involved in the experiment are "alive and well," and he took the same dachshund to his family.

"There are volunteers willing to take part in such trials. I think that tests of liquid respiration with human participation are just around the corner," Davydov said.

According to him, a prototype of the device has already been created, which has crossed the milestone of 1000 meters. The issue of medical support for the transition of a person to liquid breathing is also being worked out.

Vitaly Davydov, Chairman of the Scientific and Technical Council of the Foundation for Advanced Research:
"The use of liquid breathing will allow a person to reach the surface from a depth of about a kilometer almost without delay. For comparison, under normal conditions, the ascent from a depth of 400 meters takes about 20 days. In the case of liquid respiration, there is simply no caisson disease."

As the deputy head of the FPI stressed, the primary focus of these works is the rescue of submariners. In addition, there are still a number of ways to use such technology.

"This is the prevention and treatment of barotrauma, ensuring the body's resistance to overload. A promising area of application of liquid respiration can be operative cooling of the body. For example, to extend the "golden" hour by reducing human biological activity," concluded the agency interlocutor.
